HENRIK VIBSKOV - MAKING ART FASHIONABLE

I’ve been doing music only probably for 14 years or something and I was like: “Hey, I need to do something. I need some more” – Henrik Vibskov unveiled with a petite smirk in his interview. Henrik Vibskov grew up in the middle of the countryside of Jutland, Denmark. He graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, and now engages in visual art, music and fashion from his base in Copenhagen. He is not just a fashion designer and crowning him with no more than a single coronet would probably be a vast underestimation. Multi-talented individual that is the avant-gardist of the new generation actually fashions the art itself.

Indeed, this Scandinavian prodigy designs collections that bewitch audience semiannually. However, rather than intriguing works of his, a whole host of warped yet tantalizing universes created in relation to each collection distinguishes the designer from the others. This precise phenomenon makes him an artist, rather than a fashion prodigy. Nonetheless, both of the crowns fit him perfectly well.

As a fashion designer Henrik Vibskov has produced twenty collections since he graduated from Central St. Martin’s in 2001, and he is currently the only Scandinavian designer on the official show schedule of the Paris Men’s Fashion Week, which he has been since January 2003. Vibskov points out his difference from his nationals which is the use of colors. He’s more colourful. And louder... He’s roaring by all odds.

“The Big Wet Shiny Boobies”, “The Land of the Black Carrots”, “The Solar Donkey Experiment”, “The Slippery Spiral Situation” and “The Eat” are the few names of the shows that Henrik has brought to the public. Each title refers to nonpareil, hypnotic worlds.

Whenever asked for requests by people, his answer is always “I can do it”. Maximalism, perhaps, in this situation is like adding sugar into already double spooned tea. However, this is the jealousy speaking, for HV it is more like an extra credit.

Vibskov has succeeded in establishing a unique signature style that is recognizable across all of the diverse disciplines in which he works. He is praised by both critics and buyers. Let’s face it, his ideas, how he takes into consideration the senses of a human when creating a show, are marvelous. People are entertained, they can participate in something twisted from a daily life. This is how Henrik Vibskov fashions art.
